Chapter 20 – Types of horoscope charts

     Vedic astrology which originated in India has two styles while charting a horoscope. The people in north part of India uses a style which is diagonal in nature, whereas the south Indians use a style which is circular in nature.

     In north Indian chart there are four diagonally drawn squares and eight triangles (totals to 12 individual places). In south Indian chart, there are 12 squares spread as a circle (don’t count the one in the center that is not in our game). So, each chart has 12 unique places. What are these?


     Yes! Your guess is correct. They are zodiac signs which we saw in our previous chapters.

     But which one is Aries, Virgo, Pisces? There lies the difference between north Indian chart and South Indian chart.

     Yesterday we saw the concept of Ascendant. Placement of the ascendant and the 12 zodiac signs differs in both the charts. This is the main difference of north Indian and south Indian charts.

     In north Indian chart, the ascendant is fixed. It is always the top diagonal square in the chart as shown.

     In south Indian charts, the zodiac signs are fixed. As the first zodiac sign in the natural order shown in the Figure -2 is Aries, always Aries is the sign which is second top left square.

     Now let’s see how to find the other zodiac signs in north Indian chart and south Indian chart.

     In north Indian chart, it is counted anti clock wise as shown in Figure -3

     The numbers are given only for illustration purpose. In practice only the ascendant and the its corresponding natural zodiac sign number would be denoted as below.

     In Figure 4 it shows that ascendant is 4th sign in the natural zodiac sign order, which is Cancer.

     In south Indian charts, since the zodiac signs are fixed, only the ascendant would be marked and the zodiac signs are understood as it spread  clockwise, as a circle.
