Vedic astrology which originated in India has two styles while charting a horoscope. The people in north part of India uses a style which is diagonal in nature, whereas the south Indians use a style which is circular in nature.

In north Indian chart there are four diagonally drawn squares and eight triangles (totals to 12 individual places). In south Indian chart, there are 12 squares spread as a circle (don’t count the one in the center that is not in our game). So, each chart has 12 unique places. What are these?

But which one is Aries, Virgo, Pisces? There lies the difference between north Indian chart and South Indian chart.

Yesterday we saw the concept of Ascendant. Placement of the ascendant and the 12 zodiac signs differs in both the charts. This is the main difference of north Indian and south Indian charts.
In north Indian chart, the ascendant is fixed. It is always the top diagonal square in the chart as shown.
In north Indian chart, it is counted anti clock wise as shown in Figure -3
